Phononic crystals, a subclass of acoustic metamaterials, have had a large number of applications in microfluidic devices and as waveguides, collimators, isolators, and surface and bulk acoustic wave devices. Designing these crystals requires understanding the dispersion and scattering characteristics. The dispersion diagrams allow for a direct estimation of frequency band gaps and transmittance, which is a scattering parameter, and provides the percentage of wave energy passing through the medium.

In this webinar, Dr. Chandraprakash will talk about building models in COMSOL Multiphysics® to estimate the band gaps, reflectance, and transmittance. Examples will be provided from his recent work on two- and three-dimensional models and highlight the need for validation.

Dr. C. Chandraprakash IIT Kanpur

Dr. C. Chandraprakash is an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at IIT Kanpur, India. His current research interests include computer vision, multifunctional materials, acoustic metamaterials, thermal and ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation, and biomimicry. He received his B.Tech. and M.Tech. degrees in mechanical engineering from IIT Madras, India, in 2010. After graduating, he worked as an engineer with Tata Motors Ltd., Pune, India, before going on to earn his PhD in engineering science and mechanics from Pennsylvania State University, USA.
