Import Mesh and Return to Draw Mode

After I've imported meshes that have been created with an external program, I'd like to return to Draw Mode to insert user-defined simple geometries. However, this message appears:
"Features cannot be created on a geometry that is defined by a mesh".
It does not work also if I try the other way around, i.e., draw a geometrical object and then import a mesh, because importing an external mesh means deleting everything.
