Estimate the temperature of the catalyst system of Example 21.8-1, if Pr = 0.6, Cp = 11.7 [cal g-mol-1 K-1] and the heat of reaction per mole of cyclohexane produced is AH = - 51 [Kcal g-mol-1] for conditions on the surface of the catalyst. Suppose that the above values for the constant properties remain the same.

21.8-1 In a fixed bed reactor benzene is hydrogenated to the total pressure of 30 atm. To estimate the composition of the gas in contact with the catalyst particles in a cross section where the average conditions of gas flow are as follows:

Species Composition Mi Sc Diffusivity Ri/R3
1 Benzene 0.1 78.11 1.46 6.63 x 10-6 -1
2 Hydrogen 0.8 2.016 0.466 20.8 x 10-6 -3
Cyclohexane 0.05 84.16 1.11 8.71 x 10-6 1
Methane 0.05 16.04 0162 0 60 x 10-6 0
Total 1 -3

Other conditions of the gas stream are: Tb = 500 K, μb = 0.014 centipoise, Mb = 14.43 kg / kg-mol and 2930 kg <pv> = h-1 m-2 (based on total section of the bed) . The local rate of production of cyclohexane is 1.5 kg-mol per hour per kg of catalyst. The catalyst particles are cylinders of 0.32 x 0.32 cm, with a density of 0.9 g/cm3, the overall density of the bed is 0.60 g/cm3.
