Rotors and bearings are critical components in rotating machinery, the lifetime and reliability of which is dependent on the level of vibrations in the system. Apart from accessing critical speeds and the threshold speed for dynamic instability, the nonlinear behavior of the bearing and its interaction with the rotor are critically important. The dynamics of such complex systems can only be obtained using advanced rotordynamics simulations. To achieve accurate rotordynamics simulation results, the flexible supports and soft foundation must be considered and included in the model.

In this webinar, we will discuss methods of modeling rotors, bearings, and other components. The interactions of rotors and bearings, the modeling of misalignment, and the soft foundation will also be discussed. In addition, we will demonstrate the process of setting up and solving a rotordynamics model in the COMSOL Multiphysics® software.

Prashant Srivastava

Prashant Srivastava joined COMSOL in 2012, and currently works as a product developer within the structural mechanics group. He has also contributed to the development of the Multibody Dynamics Module. He received his PhD in aerospace engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, where he investigated the mechanical behavior of polymeric materials using molecular dynamics simulation.
