Implantable Collagen sponges are used in Spinal Surgery as Drug Delivery Scaffolds. An optimal concentration of growth factor that strikes a balance between bone growth and adverse diffusion effects is difficult to find. The porous sponge also serves as a scaffold for Osteoblast growth, and fluid shear has been shown to mediate biological effects on that cell type. We use COMSOL Multiphysics ...

Impact monitoring has been extensively studied by several researchers and it has been shown that damage extent can be correlated with the impact magnitude. In order to make the process cost-effective, simulation of the impact has been performed, to get the big training data set from modeling. The structural dynamic responses captured by PZT transducers due to impact events are recorded from ...

Musculoskeletal mineralized tissues (MMTs), e.g. bone, are hierarchical composite materials. Their effective elastic properties at different scales are of interest for computational studies of the MMT’s response to mechanical loading but also to realistically simulate implant osseointegration. We combine multi-scale and multi-modal experimental techniques with mathematical modelling of MMTs ...

We have started constructing preliminary design COMSOL models of a bacteriologically driven \'fuel cell\' that is intended to process waste products, such as carbon dioxide and brine, from a crewed vehicle. At this early stage, this complex system is reduced to two electrodes separated by a membrane. The electrolyte is a brine appropriate for growing methanogenic bateria, though none are ...

A 2D isothermal axisymmetric model of an anode-supported Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) has been developed. Also a parametric analysis to find the effect of important parameters on the cell performance has been done. This simulation has been carried out at 1 atm and 1073 K. The PEN materials are traditional ones: Ni-YSZ/YSZ/LSM-YSZ as anode, electrolyte and cathode respectively. The developed ...

In this paper an EMVD (Electro-Mechanical Valve Drive) for combustion engines is redesigned to achieve a fail-safe behavior when power loss occurs. The AC/DC Module and the Moving Mesh interface of COMSOL Multiphysics 4.2 are used to build up a transient model. This model also includes the calculation of eddy currents.

We studied the influence of a number of gas-liquid interface on the drag reduction effect by numeric simulation. Level set method was used for an analysis of gas-liquid interface. The analytic model is rectangular channel of height h = 5 micrometer and width w = 20 micrometer with two hydrophobic microstructures in bottom of channel. In this channel, we found that the liquid penetrates in the ...

The demand for high reliability motor drives increases every day, especially in aircraft where traditional, nonelectric systems (hydraulic, pneumatic) are being replaced by electrical actuators following the More Electric Aircraft (MEA) trend. Its pursuing involves the adoption of protective design concepts such as fault-tolerant or redundant approaches, aiming to minimize mission failure ...

Liquid transport in lab-on-a-chip (LOC) devices occurs through a microchannel that uses an electroosmotic flow actuation mechanism. This method has a plug-like velocity profile, which is ideal in species transport and in wall-bounded reactions. Under substantial joule heating, it is not possible to maintain a plug-like velocity distribution. My work investigates the effects of joule heating ...
Computational Modeling of the Electrohydrodynamics Influencing Trace Mercury Adsorption within Electric Utility Electrostatic Precipitators

Anthropogenic mercury (Hg) emissions increase the risk of neurological and neonatal health effects in humans through fish consumption. There are several technological approaches to controlling mercury emissions from coal combustion, including the injection of a powdered mercury sorbent into the flue gas upstream of the particulate control device (PCD). As most PCDs are electrostatic ...
