How to Model 2D Cables in COMSOL Multiphysics®

Duration: 55:52

Watch this 60-minute presentation on 2D cable modeling to learn how to use the COMSOL Multiphysics® software for modeling cable systems in 2D. Here, we demonstrate the modeling of a submarine cable and discuss topics such as capacitive, inductive, and thermal analyses; armor and phase twist; and various bonding types. Many of the topics covered apply to terrestrial cables as well.

Discussion topics include:

  • Capacitive effects in cables: dielectric loss and electromagnetic breakdown
  • Capacitance and charging current, and a comparison with analytical models
  • Interpreting results in the frequency domain
  • Litz wires and Milliken conductors
  • Suppressing skin and proximity effects in the phases, screens, and armor
  • Inductance, AC resistance, and a comparison with the DC resistance
  • Evaluation of the resistive loss and the magnetic hysteresis loss
  • Thermal effects in cables: one-way or two-way coupled induction heating
  • Temperature dependency: active and passive conductors
